The Psalms of Ascent – Ultimately, these Psalms teach worshippers how to Ascend from the world into the Presence of God.
The Psalms of Ascent, historically identified as Psalms 120 through 134, represent a structured sequence of hymns.
These 15 psalms are often associated with the 15 steps of the second temple, where Levite musicians sang them, or as songs of pilgrims traveling to Jerusalem for festivals.
However, the progression of Psalms 118 through 136 offers a deeper map of a divine plan, guiding the worshipper through the architecture of the ancient Jewish Temple in Jerusalem.
The progression through this sequence follows these stages:
Temple Dedication and Entrance (Psalm 118):
This psalm serves as a Temple dedication and a call to enter the Sacred Precincts. It features architectural language regarding gates, foundations, and the altar.
Commitment to Obedience (Psalm 119):
Before progressing further, the worshipper demonstrates strict commitment to God’s laws. This psalm uses physical imagery to dedicate various parts of the human body—from head to foot—to God’s statutes, mirroring priestly consecration rituals.
Courtyard and Purification (Psalms 120–126):
This section focuses on deliverance from distress as well as purification, corresponding to the temple’s courtyard, altar, and brazen laver. These psalms depict the soul’s cry for help, salvation, and the crossing of the sacred threshold into the sanctuary.
The Holy Place and Covenantal Blessings (Psalms 127–131): Reflecting the holy place, the imagery shifts to building a house of God and the blessings of the Abrahamic covenant, such as family and hope.
The Holy of Holies (Psalms 132–134):
This final stage focuses on the Throne of the Lord (Jesus Christ – Eternal Prophet), Kingship (Jesus Christ – Eternal King), and the Royal Priesthood (Melchizedek – pre-incarnate and Eternal Jesus Christ – Prieshood). The worshipper is brought into the divine presence, reflecting a transformation into a state of unity with God.
Final Praise (Psalms 135–136): Following the Ascent, these Psalms act as an ultimate response of Eternal (Melchizedek Prieshood) Worship and Gratitude for God’s Enduring Mercy.
Christian: The Psalms of Ascent – the final 10 steps through the Tribulation Period and into the beginning of the Millennial Kingdom reign of the true Messiah, Jesus Christ in Jerusalem.
The last 10 of 15 steps are found in the “encrypted” timeline that God placed in the Psalms for us to find now at the end of the Age of Grace/Church Age.
We also discussed current events and the need to prepare for our soon departure.
